Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 Available for Pre-Order in India

Nokia India officially introduced the Lumia series two weeks ago, but the handset manufacturer stated that both smartphones are expected to arrive in stores in mid-December.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 Available for Pre-Order in India

True to its promise, the Finnish company has just announced that Nokia Lumia 800 and 710are now available for pre-order via select Nokia Priority stores across the country.

According to folks at TheMobileIndian, customers who want to pre-order one of these Windows Phone devices are required to pay a booking amount of Rs 1,000 (20 USD or 15 EUR), in order to receive the Lumia 800 or 710 after about 10 days.

However, it appears that there’s a bit of misunderstanding between Nokia Priority stores regarding the booking amount, which may vary from store to store.

Anyway, potential customers should expect to be charged from Rs 500 (10 USD or 7 EUR) to Rs 3,000 (58 USD or 43 EUR), depending on the store.

Furthermore, the final pricing for the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 has yet to be determined, but the latest hearsay point to a Rs 30,000 (585 USD or 435 EUR) price for the former, and Rs 19,000 (370 USD or 275 EUR), respectively.

Although both Lumia devices are powered by the latest mobile operating system launched by Microsoft, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, the smartphones are aimed at different market segments.

The Lumia 800 can be considered Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone smartphone, whereas the Lumia 710 is a budget-friendly device.

The difference between the two handsets is also reflected in the hardware specs. While Lumia 800 packs 8GB of storage and an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual-LED flash, the Lumia 710 embeds only 8GB onboard memory and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

Each handset is equipped with a 1.4 GHz single core Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor, which is complemented by an Adreno 205 graphics processing unit.

The smartphones only accept microSIM cards and lack microSD card slots for memory expansion.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus iPhone 4S pitted against one another in smartphone battle

Samsung Galaxy Nexus iPhone 4S pitted against one another in smartphone battle

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S are two of the most anticipated smartphones of 2011, and for good reason: both devices pack the latest and greatest software from Google and Apple and mix it in with some pretty drool-worthy hardware. The two handsets are sure to be pitted against one another in many “Best Smartphone” discussions, so Cam over at Today’s iPhone decided to just that, putting the iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus head to head and comparing how each performs. The epic battle covers a range of hardware and software features like display quality, content/media management, and voice control capabilities, just to name a few. Also included is a video that provides an in-depth look at just which device is quicker at performand tasks like opening apps and browsing the Web.

Cam’s put together a pretty impressive rundown of each device’s strengths and weaknesses, so those of you in the market for a new smartphone should definitely take the time to read over the report and learn how these two heavyweights of the mobile world handle. Which device comes out ahead in the end? I don’t want to spoil anything, so you’ll just have to head on over to Today’s iPhone to check it all out for yourself!

Nokia 500 review: In search of Anna

Introduction

The new generation of 1GHz Symbian- powered phones can get far. They need a place to start though and the Nokia 500 is happy to help. The common belief seems to be that there are more exciting things than Symbian on a budget. OK, well, the Nokia 500 is supposed to make you reconsider.
Never mind the sound of a 1GHz processor, this phone doesn’t mind starting small. The Nokia 500 is hitting the shelves with Anna inside and the upcoming Belle gives it extra value. By the way, the Nokia 500 seems to make enough sense even without the most recent software. The Finns have more than a handful of basic smartphones whose owners will be delighted at the news of a next smartphone for the masses.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Penta-band 3G with 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA support
  • 3.2″ 16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen of 640 x 360 pixel resolution
  • 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera and VGA video recording @ 15fps; geotagging
  • Symbian Anna OS
  • 1 GHz ARM 11 CPU and 256 MB RAM
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS support and free lifetime voice-guided navigation
  • Digital compass
  • microSD card slot
  • DivX and XviD video support
  • Built-in accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS
  • microUSB port
  • Flash and Java support for the web browser
  • Stereo Bluetooth 2.1
  • Smart dialing and voice commands
  • Social networking integration
  • Exchangeable rear covers

Main disadvantages

  • Symbian Anna is still catching up with Android and iOS
  • Fixed focus flashless camera, poor image quality
  • Poor video recording quality
  • Relatively limited 3rd party software availability
  • Non-hot-swappable microSD card slot
  • No office document viewer
  • Video player not up to scratch
  • Significant lags in the browser
Nokia didn’t skimp on hardware to give the 500 a bump in processor and data speed. The excellent connectivity package is hard to beat in the low end with goodies like free SatNav and penta-band HSPA coverage.
On the other hand, they needed to match the power hike with cuts in other departments. It’s always a matter of balance in the low end after all. The all-plastic finish and garden variety TFT display are things we can live with and we think the exchangeable covers will help the target audience agree.

Nokia 500 live pictures
The low-end imaging and media are things to warn against but we guess a long list of limitations is hardly surprising for a basic smartphone.
Anyway, no point wasting time on lengthy introductions. This isn’t the first time we meet the Nokia 500. We know what to expect but focus this time will be on the actual performance. Can’t do without our traditional hardware inspection though, coming up after the break.

Design and construction

The rich assortment of colorful back covers gives the Nokia 500 enough youth appeal but other than that, it’s actually a conservatively designed phone. It’s a touchscreen-bar device of simple styling and low-cost finish, nothing extravagant about it.
The curved rear makes it comfortable to hold and the soft rubbery finish is pleasant to touch though probably not very durable. Unfortunately the screen glass and the black glossy frame get covered in fingerprints in no time. The Nokia 500 requires regular cleaning if you want to keep it looking good. The soft rubbery finish of the back cover isn’t particularly strong – it appears we managed to scratch it by simply pocketing it or putting it on tables.
The front is dominated by the 3.2″ nHD (360×640) capacitive touchscreen. The resolution fits the screen size nicely and the display looks good with pleasingly vibrant colors and enough detail. It’s just not as crisp and punchy as a ClearBlack screen.

Ovi Store provides you with apps

Symbian is still one of the most popular smartphone OSes in the world but its application store is pretty barren compared to the two juggernauts, the iOS App Store and Android’s Market.
The company has refreshed their Ovi store interface to make it more user-friendly for Symbian^3 and it’s what you get on Anna too. And while the UI is indeed very handy to use, the number of apps is somewhat of a problem.

Your account profile keeps record of all the apps you have installed under My stuff. You can now also select where games and apps should be installed and where audio and video should go. That’s nice – we wish Android had that right from the start.
