AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Review by WorldGSMPhones

Nokia pushes all sorts of boundaries with the Lumia 920, its feature-laden flagship smartphone for AT&T. If the luminescent colors don’t attract you, the big screen, LTE 4G, and dual-core performance might. Here is Phone Scoop’s full review.

Is It Your Type?

The Lumia 920 is Nokia’s latest flagship superphone. This mega-phone for AT&T crams every feature possible — LTE, PureView camera, dual-core processor, NFC, and more — into its polycarbonate shell. It runs Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 platform, and offers a wide selection of Lumia-exclusive apps and content.

Body

The Lumia 920 carries forward the design language used first by the Nokia N9 and later the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. It is formed from a polycarbonate shell that comes in various colors and has a distinct look. It’s bigger and much heavier than the 900, though it’s not pushing the same dimensions as the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

In general, I like the design of the Lumia 920 (and the 800/900 before it). It has its own look that makes it stand apart from the boring black-slab crowd. The colors certainly help, and though “polycarbonate” is really just a fancy name for plastic, the hard shell that forms the 920‘s shape has a good feel to it. The curved back surface and rounded edges are really comfortable to hold and grip.

It’s important to note that the colors have their own textures. The red, white, and yellow versions all have smooth, glossy finishes to them. The cyan and black versions have a matte finish. The matte finish sticks better in the hand, but the glossy version slips into your jeans better.

There’s no denying that the 920 is massive. It’s taller and wider than the 900, though a wee bit thinner. The difference in the weight, however, is beyond ridiculous. Where the Lumia 920 weighed 5.6 ounces, the 920 weighs 6.53 ounces. The 920 is even heavier than the much-larger Note II. By comparison, HTC’s Windows Phone 8X weighs 4.59 ounces. You feel the weight in your hand, in your pocket, in your coat: dang the 920 is a heavy, heavy phone.

Whichever color you pick, 90% of the front is the black display and surrounding bezel. The 920 has three capacitive buttons for the standard Back, Home, and Bing (search) functions. Nokia made a key improvement to the display when compared to the 900. The 900‘s display had a raised edge that was uncomfortable. That edge has been smoothed down, and the seam between the glass and the polycarbonate is so tight you can barely feel it. This makes a huge difference in how comfortable the 920 is to hold.

All of the 920’s physical buttons are on the right edge. They’re all colored black to match the display and stick out from the side of the phone the perfect amount. The volume toggle is closest to the top, followed by the screen lock in the middle, and the dedicated camera button closest to the bottom. All three buttons have absolutely perfect travel and feedback. There are no controls on the left edge at all. The microUSB port is on the bottom and the headphone jack is on the top.

In step with other modern smartphones, the Lumia 920‘s battery is built into the device and completely inaccessible. It is improved over the 900′s battery (2,100mAh compared to 1,830mAh). If a removable battery is something you want, the 920 isn’t for you.

The SIM card can only be removed with the help of a SIM card tool or small paper clip. The tray is housed in the top edge of the phone. The Lumia 920 does not have a user-accessible memory card slot, which is a bummer since WP8 now supports removable memory.

An update to fix the Galaxy Nexus network issue (Verizon confirms)

A lot of Verizon Galaxy Nexus have reported this “problem” with the phone where it shows lower signal strength compared to other Verizon phones in the same area.

HTC Cell Phones
Verizon has now said that the issue is actually not with their network but simply with the way the Galaxy Nexus shows the strength. They also said that they will be releasing an update soon which will make the signal bars behave in line with all the other Verizon phones.
The thing is, it’s not as easy as it sound. AnandTech has written an in-depth article on this matter and their findings are fascinating. First of all, as they report, people are comparing the LTE signal strength with 1x/EVDO strength, which is wrong as they are incomparable. The Galaxy Nexus shows the LTE strength in Settings>About whereas other Verizon LTE Android phones show the 1x/EVDO strength.
Secondly, when they compared the Galaxy Nexus and a DROID BIONIC side by side, they found that both had the exact same actual signal strength but the DROID BIONIC was reporting much higher signal strength in the form of bars whereas Galaxy Nexus displayed what was the actual signal strength, which was much less in their case.
This means that the rest of the Verizon phones are displaying false information through signal bars which is made to look the network look good even if it isn’t so and the Galaxy Nexus is the only phone right now which shows it as it is. And now Verizon will be releasing an update for it that make it just like others. This shows that you can’t trust carrier-branded phones when it comes to displaying the actual signal strength.

HTC Raider 4G Coming to AT&T , Unlocked version Available at WorldGSMPhones.com

HTC Raider 4G Coming to AT&T , Unlocked version Available at WorldGSMPhones.com

AT&T fired up its LTE network a few weeks ago and promised to improve its portfolio with new LTE-enabled devices. It looks like the carrier plans to debut the HTC Raider 4G Android smartphone.

The folks over at WirelessGoodness have just spotted the Raider 4G at FCC (Federal Communication Commission), which indicates that the device is close to release in the United States.

In the same news, the HTC Raider 4G is already available for purchase in Canada from Bell and Rogers. It’s unclear whether the U.S. version will be launched as HTC Raider or as HTC Holiday, but the phone was filed at FCC under a hard-to-remember codename, PH39130.

HTC Raider 4G X710A LTE Unlocked can be purchased at WorldGSMPhones.com
According to the documents filed by HTC, the smartphone packs GSM bands 850 and 1900, which may suggest that the Raider is an AT&T exclusive, at least until the end of the year.

The HTC Raider 4G comes with an impressive 4.5-inch qHD capacitive touchscreen display that boasts 540 x 960 pixels resolution and support for 16 million colors.

All sorts of sensors are included as well, such as: accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor for auto turn-off and three-axis gyro sensor.

The smartphone is powered by Google’s Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread operating system with HTC Sense user interface on top. Those who still have second thoughts about the Raider should know that the device is on track to get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade sometime next year.

Equipped with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM, the HTC Raider offers a smooth multimedia experience. There’s also 16GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

It comes with LTE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, as well as dual cameras (8-megapixel rear photo snapper and 1.3-megapixel front facing camera).

No word on the phone’s exact release date or pricing options yet

We’ve known that Samsung had intentions to bring the Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE to Canada because they posted a “coming soon” label on their site. We can now confirm that this tablet and all it’s speed will officially be hitting Bell shelves on December 7th.

If you’re out of the LTE coverage area you’ll fall back to their 4G HSPA+ network. Specs for the 8.9 Tab have it with a 8.9-inch WXGA display (1280×800), running OS 3.2 Honeycomb, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 3 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, 2 megapixel front facing camera and a 6100mAh battery.
