Motorola reportedly engineering ‘X phone’ and ‘X tablet’…

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Google and its Motorola branch are working on a future high-end smartphone to rival the Apple iPhone and the Galaxy S lineup.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Google and its Motorola branch are working on a future high-end smartphone to rival the Apple iPhone and the Galaxy S lineup.

Dubbed simply the “X Phone”, the device is expected to show up some time next year, according to WSJ’s source. The project is reportedly being led by Lior Ron, who has previously worked as a Google Product Manager, but now is busy at work with the Motorola team.

Additionally, Motorola engineers are also working on an “X” tablet, that’s going to launch after the “X” phone debuts. In the meantime, the company is going to continue its work on the DROID lineup of smartphones.

Motorola’s CEO Dennis Woodside (former Google top sales exec) said in an interview with the WSJ that the company is “investing in a team and a technology that will do something quite different than the current approaches.

The project’s leader, Lior Ron, reportedly has demanded the phone to sport killer camera. In its quest to make the phone truly unique, Motorola has looked into incorporating different materials such as ceramics, which would make the “X Phone” more resistant to drops.

WSJ sources add that Motorola’s acquisition of gesture and facial recognition company Viewdle will also be thrown in to the mix to bring some truly unique features to the device. Could the X Phone, intriguing as it sounds, be ready for Google’s I/O 2013 event in the summer of 2013? We’ll have to wait and see.

Motorola ELITE FLIP brings offers high-end specs in a Bluetooth headset

Motorola today unveiled its new NFC-equipped ELITE FLIP, an advanced Bluetooth headset that shares many of its abilities with the new ELITE SLIVER that was also shown today.

The versatile design of the ELITE FLIP gives users the choice between use of an over-the-ear hook for mounting or an in-ear gel. Ease of use is fostered by the FLIP’s namesake switch, which allows the user to power on the headset and answer a call in one fell swoop, preventing the need for the headset to be powered on at all times waiting for a call. If you do choose to leave the headset powered on, it should be good for up to 12 hours of standby time or 6 hours of talk time, according to Motorola.

Like the ELITE SLIVER, the new ELITE FLIP uses NFC wireless to offer an improved pairing process that requires little more than tapping the headset against a compatible NFC smartphone. Likewise, the ELITE FLIP also supports Bluetooth Class 1 connections to give it the ability to maintain a connection up to 300 feet away, so users aren’t tied down to their phones. Motorola’s ELITE FLIP also includes Motorola’s CrystalTalk technology and dual microphones for reduced background noise, and supports wideband HD Audio Plus for improved call sound quality.

Motorola’s ELITE FLIP also works with the company’s free My MotoSpeak smartphone app, which will give users the ability to not only hear inbound text messages, but actually dictate them entirely hands-free, thanks to a dedicated “smart button” found on the headset. My MotoSpeak can also be used to configure headsets settings, including noise cancellation and the equalizer.

The Motorola ELITE FLIP will be available from Motorola’s online store starting on October 24 for $99.99.

Gingerbread update for the Motorola ATRIX 4G is being sent out to testers

Only a few days ago, we found out that Motorola was seeking out approximately 1,000 owners to beta test the handset’s upcoming Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, but it now appears that they’re finally seeing it being rolled out to them in batches.

Apparently, it seems that Motorola managed to scoop up the testers they needed for this update – and the timing couldn’t have been any better on their part. These lucky owners will undoubtedly be able to check out the most up-to-date version of the platform on their handsets, and if everything goes smoothly, we’re confident that an official release could possibly be in the books in the very near future.

Taking into account that the Motorola ATRIX 4G is still one of the top handsets around on AT&T’s lineup right now, it’s just nice to know that the handset is still seeing its fair share of love – even if it’s taking some time to get Gingerbread properly out to the masses.

Motorola RAZR

Motorola RAZR

Known by some as “the iPod of mobile phones”, Motorola’s original 2003 RAZR clamshell handsets we’re the height of geek chic, selling over 130 million handsets during its four-year shelf life. The RAZR 2 series (including the V8 and V9) was also massively popular, if never reaching quite the same levels of success of its predecessor.

After stepping out of the limelight for the last few years as Motorola went smartphone crazy with the DROID range, the RAZR is now back in a sleek Android smartphone form. We went hands-on at a preview session earlier today. Read on for our initial thoughts.

Despite being feather-light in the hand at 127grams and being the thinnest smartphone on the market at 7.1mm thick at it’s thinnest point (the chunkier, curved top lip notwithstanding), the Motorola RAZR feels big. Boasting a massive 4.3″ 540×960 Super AMOLED Advanced display, it’s a real stunner that while sleek enough to fit comfortably in a pocket, absolutely demands your attention once the rich, colourful touchscreen fires up.

It’s also a bit of tough-cookie too. Not only have all connections been “splash-proofed”, the rear panel is also made of Kevlar. Yep, the same Kevlar that features in bullet-proof vests. While we wouldn’t suggest putting the handset up as a shield in front of a firing squad, it’ll certainly take a fair few falls and scrapes and come out unscathed by the looks of things.

Motorola Razr

Cameras are of the 8MP/1080p variety on the rear, and 1.3MP up front. That large qHD screen came into its own when previewing snaps, and the auto stabilisation seemed sturdy, but most impressive was shutter speeds. Perhaps not quite as fast as the recent iPhone 4S, the RAZR looks so far a fine alternative to a dedicated compact, even if the digital zoom is inevitably ropey.

Under the hood is a 1.2 GHz processor, and it looked particularly zippy. With the hands-off part of today’s demo session done over a HDMI-mirroring connection with a flatscreen TV, the RAZR barely broke a sweat when playing back a 1080p video file of Toy Story 3 on the big screen.

Like the Atrix before it, that extra processing grunt comes in handy when the phone is paired with Motorola’s range of “lap dock” accessories. Using the same “webtop” interface as the Atrix, running on top of Androdi Gingerbread version 2.3.5, the phone can be used to power a screen and keyboard combo just by docking the smartphone, charging it at the same time. Though pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, you’ll get a 14‖ HD resolution screen with keyboard with the 500 Pro dock, and a keyboard/10.1 inch screen combo with the Lapdock 100 (no resolution info as of yet).

Another new accessory will be the Smart Controller; a slim, phone-sized remote that pairs with your RAZR and lets you lean back and control the smartphone from a distance when it’s being mirrored over HDMI. The Smart Controller features the regular array of four Android hardware buttons, as well as a trackpad for moving the onscreen pointer, and can even be used to take and answer calls by flipping it over.. Using a universal Bluetooth standard, there’s no reason the Smart Controller won’t work with other Android handsets that can do HDMI- mirroring too.

Perhaps the most interesting aspects of the RAZR though are the new Motocast and Smart Action features. Motocast is like Motorola’s own take on Dropbox, allowing a number of PCs or Macs to be linked to the phone, allowing for syncing of documents, photos, videos and music across devices. These files can be accessed, streamed and downloaded to local storage over 3G too, meaning you don’t need to be in range of a Wi-Fi connection to reap the benefits. Motocast is built into practically all the major applications of the phone, meaning you’ll regularly see options in the Gallery app or Music Player app to access photos or songs you’ve got stored elsewhere for instance.

Image of Motorola Dinara for AT&T leaks, could be the Atrix 3

A photo of the press variety has surfaced purporting to be AT&T’s next Motorola handset. Signs point to the photo being the device codenamed Dinara. We’ve heard the name bandied about plenty in past months, and rumors point to the device featuring a 720p HD display and run Ice Cream Sandwich on Ma Bell’s LTE network. Given the higher-end specs, there is a strong possibility the Dinara could launch as the Motorola Atrix 3.

While the handset doesn’t follow Motorola’s recent design language that has made its way to the RAZR line, Xyboard tablets, and even the Droid 4 on Verizon, we do see from the photo a move towards Android 4.0 software buttons, an OS-level element that Moto is slowly bringing over to their newer devices.   A July 26th date on the mocked-up homescreen could suggest a launch date, but consider it a rumor for now.

Motorola has just unveiled a new triple-SIM Mobile MOTOKEY 3-CHIP…

WorldGSMPhones-Canada-CanadaGSM-New-Motorola-launches-triple-SIM-MOTOKEY-3-CHIP-for-Brazil-1WorldGSMPhones-Canada-CanadaGSM-New-Motorola-launches-triple-SIM-MOTOKEY-3-CHIP-for-Brazil

Motorola has just unveiled a new addition to its mobile phone portfolio and it’s a pretty strange device. The new handset is a feature phone called Motorola MOTOKEY 3-CHIP and has 3 SIM card slots as its key selling point.

The other highlights of the MOTOKEY 3-CHIP are a full physical QWERTY keyboard a 2 MP camera, an FM radio receiver and a microSD card slot. The handset will have a 2GB microSD card included in its retail package.

Being a simple featurephone, the Motorola MOTOKEY 3-CHIP doesn’t even offer a touch-enabled display. Also just one of its SIMs may be used for transferring data at a time, with the other two available only for telephony and messaging.

The MOTOKEY 3-CHIP will only be available on the Brazilian market from the first week of June. The suggested retail price of the handset is 349 BRL (around $171).
